INTRODUCTION TO PERU
With a population of 32 million people, Peru is situated on the Pacific coastline of Latin America. The country has three main geographical regions of the desert coast, the central Andes Mountains and the Amazon Jungle. The capital Lima has in excess of 10 million inhabitants and lies on the desert coast. It is now famous for its culinary prowess on a world stage; with the fusion of foods brought from a diverse heritage of local and immigrant peoples.
The Andes Mountains are home to Cusco city the centre of the famed Inca Empire that created their heaviest influence on the continent from the years 1438 to 1533. Today the highlands still hold the treasures of that era with the famed citadel of Machu Picchu a mysterious and awe-inspiring wonder of their legacy. Further along the Andes in the south lies Lake Titicaca the highest navigable lake in the world at a lofty 12,500 feet (3,810 metres). Here the Aymaran people practice subsistence farming methods and the Uru people live a traditional life on floating islands built upon the lake. These cultures are some of the most ancient in all South America.
The nearby Colca Canyon east of Arequipa is one of the world’s deepest canyons at 3,270 meters (10,730 feet). It is the home of the famed Condor bird of prey with wingspans of up to 2.7 metres (9 feet). To conclude in Peru, the Amazon Jungle covers some 60% of the area of Peru and is one of the most biologically diverse places upon the planet. These lands boast the largest number of bird species in the world and the third-largest number of mammals; 44% of bird species and 63% of mammal species inhabiting the Peruvian Amazon. Peru, without question, a land of diverse attractions!
BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:
The highlands of Peru (i.e. the Cusco Region and Puno/Lake Titicaca) has two seasons: the dry season (May – October) and the wet season (November – April). The shoulder months of April, November and December typically see only light rain, so these are also good months to consider. In the wet season the months of February and March see the heaviest rainfall, which can sometimes affect travel schedules to Machu Picchu. Holidays and festivals like Christmas and New Year, along with Inti Raymi (June 24) and Semana Santa (Easter time) are busy times to travel to Peru, so planning early (12 months in advance) is important. The coastal region of Peru is generally good to travel all year round. The Pacific coastline of Peru is typically warm all year around, but from January until March / April temperatures increase significantly. The Amazon Jungle can be visited all year round, but the low water season (April – October) see less rain, making it a more popular time to travel. Contact a Peru Vacations Expert for more information about the best time to travel to Peru.
- The months of April and May are statistically our busiest months, so planning up to 6-months in advance is highly recommended. For Christmas and New Year book 12 months in advance!
- The Sol is the official currency in Peru, but United States Dollar is also accepted. Ripped, marked or even slightly damaged US currency is not accepted, so make sure you only bring crisp new notes.
- A carefully planned trip that increments the altitude a bit at a time is the best way to avoid altitude sickness. From experience only about 1% of our clients suffer anything more than mild altitude symptoms. We have never had a client evacuated from high altitude or rushed to a clinic.
- The 4-days Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu can sell out many months in advance, so we recommend booking as early as possible. The Inca Trail is closed for maintenance for the entire month of February.
- Only a true fan of archeological ruins could see all the ruins that Peru has to offer. Don’t try to cram pack your vacation with as many ruins as possible, you’ll find it tiring and perhaps a little repetitive. Why not incorporate some alternative activities? Cooking classes, gastronomical experiences, high or low adrenaline activities and cultural activities could really enhance your trip! Talk to a Peru vacations expert for more ideas.
