Luis Jussyf Velarde Mora

Head of Guiding (Peru)

Forging the way in unique guiding experiences, Luis is one of Totally Latin America’s most respected guides. Proud to share his vast knowledge of Peru, Luis is an expert in Inca history, the Amazon Jungle and unique adventure activities.

“Showing people incredible archaeological sites is a wonderful part of guiding in Peru, but the real rewards come when we connect our clients to local people, culture and the real Peru. Combining these aspects creates a rewarding and meaningful travel experience, and one where wonderful memories and friendships are forged.”

Born in the department of ‘La Convención,’ in the high-jungle of southern-Peru, Luis has always had a deep spiritual connection with the Amazon Rainforest. In his early years, he worked on a voluntary basis at a research lodge in the Manu Biosphere Reserve. It was here working with foreign scientists and research students, his knowledge and appreciation of the Amazon bloomed. In this remote environment he was also able to polish and refined his English skills, working almost uniquely with native English speakers.

Nowadays, as a seasoned guide, Luis has escorted clients extensively throughout Peru. He has covered all the major tourist circuits, as well as developing Totally Latin America’s program of experiential trips to lesser-known destinations. Luis is professionally licensed and qualified to guide in Peru and is certified by the government office Dircetur. His qualifications go far beyond what regular guides obtain, and some of his more unique certifications include ecotourism, ornithology and cartography.

Although his favorite destination is Machu Picchu, he believes that everyone should experience the beauty of ‘El Pongo de Mainique’ located in Megantoni in his home province – La Convención.

“El Pongo de Mainique is a canyon a little less than 2 miles in length, which you can only navigate by motorboat. Here, great volumes of water descended from the Andes and onto the Amazon plains, passing through the canyon in the form of over 40 waterfalls. This natural wonder is one of the world’s most diverse regions of the world and is surrounded by awe-inspiring jungle vistas. The local area is known for its coffee and chocolate plantations, and unique Amazon cuisine. It is simply Amazing!”

On his days off, Luis enjoys spending time with his family, is a keen photographer and loves to spend time birdwatching.
