The land of opportunity

Introduction to Colombia

The country of Colombia was inhabited by various Indian native tribes from the years 4000 B.C. until 1600 A.D. Notable ones were the Musica who lived on the plateau of the Eastern Cordillera; the Tayrona who built their ‘lost city’ in the Sierra Nevada de Santa, the Quimbaya in on the western coffee producing side of the central Cordillera, the Zenú who lived along the Sinú River and finally the The Calima famed for their gold ornaments, intricate pottery, and weaving skills.

The Spaniards Alonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci arrived at La Guajira in 1499 and began the era of the conquistadores here over the coming centuries. The modern day cities of Colombia had their inception at this time with Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada founding the capital Santa Fé de Bogotá, and Sebastián de Belalcázar founding of Cali and Popayan. Also the city of Cartagena de Indias became a key port of the New World. It became a huge exporter of gold that was mined by native people and later by African slaves.

Colombia as a standalone country  resulted from the dissolution of Gran Colombia in 1830 along with Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela.  Until 1861, it was still called New-Granada whose name was changed into Colombia in honour of Christopher Columbus.

Colombia as a sovereign country was quite prosperous, however in the 20th century the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) became a significant influence on society. Established in 1964 as a Marxist-Leninist guerrilla group that tried to overthrow the Colombian government and was involved in a number of armed conflicts against the Colombian state. This contributed to a prolonged and complex internal conflict that deeply affected Colombia’s social and political landscape.

Today the country is thankfully a generally peaceful place and is a shining example of triumph over adversity in Latin America. There has been a great improvement in the stability of domestic affairs and overall public safety. Cities like Medellín, once renowned for violence, have transformed into hubs of culture and innovation. The main destinations are Bogota, Cartagena, the Caribbean Coast, the beautiful Andes and Santa Marta Mountains, along with the coffee growing regions. The locals are renowned as a friendly, gregarious people and the country offers stunningly diverse natural landscapes.
