INTRODUCTION TO CHILE
The Republic of Chile is a long narrow country of 18 million people that straddles the Andes Mountains down the west coast of South America. The country is 4,000 miles (6,435 kilometres) in length and yet just 61 miles (91 kilometres) in width. The people are a modern society of mainly European descendent with Germans, French, British, and Italians and even some Chinese. Chile is known for its incredible literary tradition with writers such as Nobel Prize winners Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda and Isabel Allende known the world over. In addition, a small minority of Mapuche native people still live in the southern and central regions around Arucania. These native people are now often active in the arts world promoting a regeneration of their heritage.
The geographic regions are diverse such as San Pedro de Atacama the driest desert on the planet and the country stretches along the spine of the great Andes Mountains to Cape Horn at Tierra del Fuego. The remote island of Rapi Nui or Easter Island is also a part of Chile and home to the fascinating Moai statues that dot the island some 2,900 miles (3,700 km) across the Pacific Ocean. The scenery of Patagonian Chile is breath-taking at Torres del Paine National Park and further highlights to see in Chile include Chiloe Island, Pucon and the wines regions of Santiago and Viña del Mar.
BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:
Chile is a long thin country that encompasses the arid Atacama Desert in the north to the rolling vineyards in the central region to the icy cold glacier filled lakes of Patagonia in the south. Picking the best to travel depends largely on which part of the country you’ll visit. Northern Chile (San Pedro de Atacama) can be visited all year round. Due to its high elevation it is not as hot as you might think, with daily temperatures averaging 70 – 80 Deg F (22 – 27 Dec C). Go prepared with a sweater as night time temperatures can drop to freezing. Easter Island can be visited all year round and has moderate daily temperatures kept cool by the constant sea breeze. Santiago and Central Chile has a Mediterranean climate and is accessible all year round. In Spring, the region becomes beautifully green, whilst summers are very pleasant with 12 hours of sunshine guaranteed. Southern Chile & Patagonia is best visited during the summer months December – April, when daily temperatures are higher making the region more accessible.
