INTRODUCTION TO BRAZIL

Predominantly tropical, Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and has a population of 210 million. Brazil is a country of continental proportions offering diverse destinations such as the Amazon Jungle at Manaus, the Pantanal Wetlands, Salvador, Ouro Preto, Iguazu Falls, the beautiful beaches of the Atlantic coastline and so much more.

In the year 1500 the colonial forces with 13 ships of Pedro Alvares Cabral from Portugal arrived at Porto Seguro. Subsequently he claimed the area for the Portuguese Empire and Brazil remained a Portuguese colony until 1808, when the capital of the empire was transferred from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro. Most Brazilians are descended from three ethnic groups: Amerindians, European Portuguese settlers, and Africans. A second influx of peoples began in the 1850’s seeing arrivals from from Europe, the Middle East, and afar as Japan. This diversity of cultures has created a rich religious, musical, and culinary culture.

Today Brazil has two of the largest cities in South America at Rio de Janeiro with 6. 3 million people and Sao Paolo at 12.1 million the largest financial hub on the continent. The culture of Brazil is famed for its friendliness and comes to the fore in the globally famous carnival celebrations held each February. Samba dance takes centre stage in a once in a lifetime opportunity like no show on earth.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:

Brazil lies in mostly in the tropics, so the climate is generally warm all year round. Of course, Brazil is a huge country and the weather varies by region. Southern Brazil has two distinct climates, the dry season (March – November) and the wet season (December – February) which is warmer yet receives more rainfall. During the winter months (June – September) temperatures can drop significantly, with some days being bright and sunny, whilst other days being wet and overcast. The East Coast and Northern Brazil has fairly stable temperatures all year around, with average daily temperatures ranging from 79 – 86 Deg F (26 – 30 Deg C). March to July sees a slight change in weather with a higher chance of sporadic rain showers. The Amazon Jungle and Pantanal are good destinations to visit throughout the year. The Amazon Region sees increased rainfall from December – March. August and September are considered the best times to travel, due to a lower chance of rainfall. Pantanal region has constant daily temperature throughout the year. In Pantanal May – October is the best time for animal viewing.

INSIDER'S TIPS

  • Brazilians take their vacations from January – March (their summertime), so popular coastal destinations fill up fast. Due to the high demand for hotels and services, this is also a more expensive time to travel.
  • Rio Carnival dates change every year. It officially starts the Friday before Ash Wednesday (51 days to Easter). During Carnival hotel prices to increase by 3 or 4 times, with hotels imposing minimum stays of 3+ nights. Either embrace the festival or avoid it!
  • Tip 3: Can be here and maybe about when to travel.
  • Brazil is a very large country, so planning the route of your trip carefully is important. Brazil has some 4,000 airports so utilizing air travel can be an efficient use of time.
