INTRODUCTION TO BRAZIL
Predominantly tropical, Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and has a population of 210 million. Brazil is a country of continental proportions offering diverse destinations such as the Amazon Jungle at Manaus, the Pantanal Wetlands, Salvador, Ouro Preto, Iguazu Falls, the beautiful beaches of the Atlantic coastline and so much more.
In the year 1500 the colonial forces with 13 ships of Pedro Alvares Cabral from Portugal arrived at Porto Seguro. Subsequently he claimed the area for the Portuguese Empire and Brazil remained a Portuguese colony until 1808, when the capital of the empire was transferred from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro. Most Brazilians are descended from three ethnic groups: Amerindians, European Portuguese settlers, and Africans. A second influx of peoples began in the 1850’s seeing arrivals from from Europe, the Middle East, and afar as Japan. This diversity of cultures has created a rich religious, musical, and culinary culture.
Today Brazil has two of the largest cities in South America at Rio de Janeiro with 6. 3 million people and Sao Paolo at 12.1 million the largest financial hub on the continent. The culture of Brazil is famed for its friendliness and comes to the fore in the globally famous carnival celebrations held each February. Samba dance takes centre stage in a once in a lifetime opportunity like no show on earth.
