Juan Manuel Aguilar

Head Naturalist Guide (Peru)

Guiding for more than two-decades, Juan Manuel is considered one of foremost experts on Peru’s Amazon Jungle. His favorite destination is Manu National Park but is frequently found guiding in the region of Tambopata and Pacaya-Samiria near Iquitos.

“Manu National Park is one of the most pristine habitats on the planet. Due to its varied elevations and geography, the biodiversity is mind-blowing. Over the years, I have been privileged to see the pygmy marmoset monkey, jaguar and harpy eagle, to name a few.’

As a professionally qualified guide, Juan Manuel is certified to guide all destinations in Peru, and has a passion for Peruvian history, spanning early cultures from the Chavin period through to Inca times and even later to the Spanish colonial period. Enjoying the challenge of constantly improving his knowledge base, Juan Manuel regularly participates in tourism related seminars, workshops and discussions with government organizations and local educational authorities. As mandatory with all Totally Latin America guides, Juan Manuel is certificated annually for first aid.

Away from work, Juan Manuel enjoys spending time with his young family. He is also a keen gardener with an amazing collection of native orchids and plants. His knowledge of exotic jungle fruits and flavors also makes him quite the specialist in unique cocktails. Be sure to ask him for a Aguaymanto sour.

“I love to eat great food, and I encourage everyone to try some local dishes whilst in Peru. Cuy and Alpaca are two of my favorite dishes.”
