10 Day Amazon Jungle & Machu Picchu

Short tour summary

A ten day tour that starts with a visit to the Amazon Jungle in Southern Peru, followed by a trip to see the highlights of the mystical Inca empire. A well paced and relaxing ten day tour that includes: four days in The Amazon Jungle at an all inclusive Jungle Lodge, Cusco, The Sacred Valley and an overnight stay in Machu Picchu. Day 1

Lima CathedralToday you will arrive in Lima from your international flights. We will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. If you have an early arrival time, should you wish we can arrange a short tour of the colonial sites of Lima.

In the evening you may want to try some of the fantastic restaurants that Lima has to offer, or perhaps relax around the entertainment complex of Larcomar, in the up-market Miraflores district.

 

Day 2 - 5

The Amazon Jungle a dense mainly impenetrable region of Peru covering some two-thirds of the country, and is considered to have the greatest bio-diversity on earth, offering some 595 different species of birds, 1,200 types of butterflies, 2,000 species of fish, 300 reptiles, and more than 50,000 plants.

Amazon VacationsToday you will embark on a 4 day tour into the Tambopata National Reserve, located a short flight from Lima in the southern jungles of Peru. You will fly to the airport town of Puerto Maldonado upon where you will be met and transferred along the Madre de Dios River to your jungle lodge.

After you have settled into your accommodation, you will have an orientation meeting with the lodge staff and naturalist guides to discuss the activities you will undertake over the next few days.  

Close to the lodge there is a tree top canopy tower. From atop you will obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then toucans, parrots or macaws are seen flying against the horizon, and flocks of various canopy dwellers will land in the treetop around you.

Madre de Dios - Mother of God River in the Amazon Jungle VacationsYou can take a twenty minute boat ride down-river leading to a trail designed by the staff of the Centro Ñape. The Centro Ñape is a communal organization that produces medicines out of forest plants and administers them to patients who use their small clinic. They have produced a trail which explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants.

Also there is a clay lick, only a twenty minute walk from the lodge, where from a blind located about twenty meters away you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend to ingest the clay on a river bank. You will be amazed as species such as The Mealy, Yellow- headed Amazon, Blue-headed Parrot and Dusky headed Parakeet descend at this clay lick.

On your final day in The Amazon, you will retrace the river journey back to the port of Puerto Maldonado. From here you will connect with your morning flights to the Inca Capital – Cusco.

On arrival in Cusco we will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel for the afternoon. There are no planned activities this afternoon, so you will have the rest of the day to relax and explore this beautiful and colonial city at your own pace.

 

Day 6

In the afternoon our English speaking guide and driver will collect you from your hotel, and take you for a tour of Cusco and the surrounding areas. The tour includes a visit to The Inca Fortress of Sacsayhuamán, the Inca sanctuary of Tambomachay dedicated to the worship of water, the Inca temple of the sun – Koricancha and more. You will have free time in the evening to explore at you leisure.

 

Day 7

Sacred Valley PeruToday after breakfast, we will collect you for a full day tour to the Sacred Valley. First you will travel to the attractive village of Ollantaytambo, located at the western end of the Valley. The town is located at the foot of some spectacular Inca ruins, strategically built to defend the entrance to the Urubamba Valley. After your guided tour of the ruins, you will travel the short distance to the market town of Pisac; where you will rest for lunch (included). In Pisac you will have time to explore the famous bustling artisan market in the main plaza, set below the sprawling Inca ruins in the mountains above. 

In the evening you may want eat in one of the many excellent restaurants located around Plaza de Armas. Perhaps try the local delicacy of Cuy (Guinea-pig)!!!

 

Day 8

Today you will have an early start for your trip to the imperial Inca city of Machu Picchu. Should Amazon toursyou take The Vistadome Train or The Hiram Bingham Train, you will be struck by the constantly changing and beautiful scenery of The Urubamba Valley as you make your way towards Machu Picchu.

You will be met at the train station and transferred by shuttle bus to Machu Picchu. Your private guide will give you a two hour guided tour of the citadel, including The Temple of the Sun, The Royal Tomb, The Temple of Three Windows and much more! For lunch we will take you to The Sanctuary Lodge Hotel, conveniently located next to the citadel for a relaxing buffet lunch. 

In the afternoon you will have free time to explore Machu Picchu, before heading down to the small town of Aguas Calientes and onto your hotel for the evening.

 

Day 9

Machu Picchu AlternativeToday you will have a free day to re-visit Machu Picchu. Today is your opportunity to explore some of the sights that are not included on the standard tour. You may wish to hike the small mountain of Huayna Picchu (Young Mountain) to see the amazing views that are offered from this vantage point. Or, perhaps a visit to the amazing Inca Bridge, built as a secret access route to the Citadel.

After lunch you will return to Aguas Calientes, where you can catch your early evening train back to Cusco. We will collect your from Poroy train station and transfer you to your hotel one stop before Cusco, saving you an hour on the train.

 

Day 10

After a relaxing breakfast, we will collect you from your hotel and take you to Cusco airport for your mid-morning flights to Lima. In Lima airport you can wait to connect to your onward flight, or alternatively we can arrange transport to take you in to Lima for some last minute shopping, or perhaps a spot of Lunch.
